A stylized neuroanatomical illustration of a star-shaped astrocyte with a central soma and numerous radially branching processes ending in bulbous endfeet. This glial cell resides in nervous tissue of the CNS (central nervous system) and is studied in neuroanatomy, neurobiology, and histology. Functionally, it supports neurons, regulates extracellular ion and neurotransmitter homeostasis, and contributes to the BBB (blood-brain barrier) via perivascular endfeet.
