A stylized depiction of a Y-shaped antibody (Ab), also called an immunoglobulin (Ig), of the adaptive immune system. The figure shows two identical light–heavy chain arms forming the fragment antigen-binding (Fab) regions and a stem representing the fragment crystallizable (Fc) domain. Studied in immunology and biochemistry, this glycoprotein binds specific antigens to neutralize pathogens and recruits effector mechanisms such as opsonization and complement activation. In biological hierarchy, it is a molecule functioning within the humoral branch of the immune system.
