Within the biological hierarchy, this haploid microgametophyte is a multicellular stage housed inside the pollen wall (exine and intine) of the angiosperm reproductive system. In botany and plant reproductive biology (palynology), it comprises a large vegetative cell and a generative cell (GC), which divides to form two sperm cells (SCs); the vegetative cell enables pollen tube growth required for fertilization.
