A schematic cross-section illustrates the laminated fetal membranes forming the gestational sac. From superficial to deep, the amnion (AMN) shows a simple amniotic epithelium above a basement membrane, followed by ECM-rich compact and fibroblast stromal layers, merging into a spongy layer and the chorion (CR) with trophoblast. In anatomy and histology, these extraembryonic tissues comprise epithelial, mesenchymal, and trophoblastic cell types. Located around the fetus within the uterus, they provide mechanical protection, barrier and transport functions, and paracrine signaling. ECM denotes extracellular matrix.
