Ammonia molecule: A simplified ball-and-stick diagram shows a central nitrogen atom (blue) covalently bonded to three peripheral hydrogen atoms (gray), forming a trigonal pyramidal geometry with a lone electron pair on nitrogen. At the structural hierarchy, individual atoms compose an inorganic molecule at the chemical level. In chemistry and biochemistry, NH3 (ammonia) acts as a weak base and nitrogen donor, interconverting with ammonium (NH4+) to support buffering and biosynthetic reactions.
