A dorsal view illustration of a hard tick nymph showing the oval idiosoma with ornate scutum and eight segmented legs. The organism is Dermacentor variabilis (American dog tick; D. variabilis), an ixodid arachnid ectoparasite studied in acarology, entomology, and parasitology. As a hematophagous juvenile stage within the tick life cycle, the nymph attaches to skin of terrestrial mammals. It functions as a disease vector, notably for Rocky Mountain spotted fever (RMSF) caused by Rickettsia rickettsii, within North American ecosystems.
