Dorsal view of an adult male Dermacentor variabilis (American dog tick), family Ixodidae. The specimen exhibits the characteristic ornate scutum that in males covers the entire dorsum, with cream-to-white maculations on a reddish‑brown background. The anterior capitulum with short palps and hypostome is visible, and eight segmented legs encircle the idiosoma; festoons line the posterior margin. This ixodid ectoparasite is a hematophagous vector of pathogens such as Rickettsia rickettsii (Rocky Mountain spotted fever) and Francisella tularensis (tularemia).
