An adult female ixodid tick is shown in dorsal view with an ornate scutum, capitulum, and eight segmented legs. In biological hierarchy, it is an arthropod (class Arachnida) within the family Ixodidae, depicted as a whole organism comprising mouthparts and idiosoma. In parasitology and vector biology, this ectoparasite feeds on vertebrate blood and can transmit pathogens causing RMSF (Rocky Mountain spotted fever) and tularemia. The organism type is an ectoparasitic arachnid located on host skin during hematophagy. The species illustrated is Dermacentor variabilis, commonly called the American dog tick.
