The central air space is bounded by a thin alveolar epithelium and fused basement membrane forming the alveolar–capillary (A–C) barrier, encircled by capillary endothelium. In the hierarchy of respiratory anatomy, the alveolus is a microscopic air sac within lung parenchyma of the lower respiratory tract. In pulmonary physiology, this structure enables diffusion of O2 (oxygen) and CO2 (carbon dioxide) across the respiratory membrane during ventilation–perfusion.
