A schematic shows a flexible, unstructured polypeptide chain representing an intrinsically disordered region (IDR) of a protein. In structural biology and biochemistry, this protein segment lacks stable secondary and tertiary structure and occurs as part of a larger protein macromolecule within the cell. At the hierarchy level, it is a sub-regional sequence within a protein, which in turn functions within cellular systems. IDRs facilitate transient protein–protein interactions, mediate signal transduction, and often serve as hotspots for post-translational modifications.
