A schematic illustration of immunoglobulin E (IgE), a Y-shaped antibody protein of the adaptive immune system. The diagram shows two identical epsilon heavy chains and two light chains linked by disulfide bonds, forming paired Fab (fragment antigen-binding) regions and an Fc (fragment crystallizable) region. In immunology and biochemistry, IgE binds allergens and engages the high-affinity FcεRI (Fc epsilon receptor I) on mast cells and basophils, enabling type I hypersensitivity responses and rapid mediator release at mucosal and connective tissue sites.
