A stylized depiction of a single lymphoid-lineage leukocyte with a smooth, round cell body and lightly shaded cytoplasm. In immunology and cell biology, this cell type represents a B lymphocyte (B cell), a white blood cell of the adaptive immune system within the lymphatic and circulatory systems. Functionally, it recognizes antigen via the B cell receptor (BCR) and, upon activation and differentiation into plasma cells, secretes antibodies (immunoglobulins, Ig) to mediate humoral immunity. Hierarchically, it is a lymphocyte subtype within leukocytes.
