5 hydroxyindole acetaldehyde molecule. The diagram shows a ball-and-stick structural formula of an indole-derived small molecule with a phenolic 5‑hydroxy group and an aldehyde side chain. In biochemical hierarchy, it is a small organic metabolite within the serotonin (5‑HT) degradation pathway of cellular metabolism. Known as 5‑HIAL (5‑hydroxyindole acetaldehyde), it is produced by monoamine oxidase (MAO) from serotonin and is further oxidized by aldehyde dehydrogenase (ALDH) to 5‑HIAA (5‑hydroxyindoleacetic acid). This metabolite arises in neural tissue and liver, supporting neurochemistry and clinical pathology studies.
