In molecular biology and biochemistry, 4E-BP (eukaryotic translation initiation factor 4E-binding protein) binds eIF4E (eukaryotic initiation factor 4E) to suppress cap-dependent translation initiation in the cytoplasm of eukaryotic cells, thereby modulating protein synthesis. As a protein within the cellular translational machinery hierarchy, its phosphorylation promotes release of eIF4E, enabling eIF4F (eukaryotic initiation factor 4F) complex assembly and mRNA translation.
