A schematic cross-section of a blood vessel wall highlights vascular smooth muscle cells (VSMCs) encircling the lumen. In histology and cardiovascular physiology, these contractile cells reside in the tunica media (tissue level) between the endothelium of the tunica intima and the yellow internal elastic lamina (IEL). As a cell type, VSMCs regulate vascular tone, vasoconstriction, and vasodilation, thereby controlling blood pressure and regional blood flow in arteries and arterioles.
