In biological hierarchy, it is a protein within blood plasma of the circulatory system. In hematology and biochemistry, von Willebrand factor (vWF) mediates primary hemostasis by tethering platelets via glycoprotein Ib (GPIb) and by binding and stabilizing coagulation factor VIII (FVIII). The site of action is the vascular lumen, where the molecule extends under flow to promote platelet adhesion to injured vessel walls.
