Enamel overlies dentin and the vascular–neural pulp, with decay approaching the dentinoenamel junction (DEJ). Arterioles, venules, and nerves enter through the apical foramen. In dentistry and oral pathology, this organ enables mastication, and caries weaken structure and may progress to pulpitis.
