A schematic illustrates the beam path and components of a benchtop Fourier-transform infrared (FTIR) imaging spectrometer. The scientific instrument includes an infrared (IR) source, a Michelson interferometer (MI) with beamsplitter and mirrors, relay lenses, a microscope objective over a sample stage, and an IR detector connected to a computer. In the instrumentation hierarchy, the interferometer and optics form subsystems within the spectrometer. In optics, spectroscopy, and analytical chemistry, it enables spatially resolved IR spectral imaging for chemical mapping of samples.
