Schematic of a sarcomere, the fundamental contractile unit within a myofibril of striated muscle fiber. Central thick myosin filaments occupy the A band (anisotropic band) flanked by thin actin filaments forming the I band (isotropic band), with the M line at the center and Z discs (Z lines) at each boundary. Elastic titin spans from Z disc to myosin, maintaining alignment. In muscle physiology and cell biology, this subcellular structure enables force generation via the sliding-filament mechanism within the cytoplasm of skeletal or cardiac muscle.
