Within the biological hierarchy, it represents a nucleated progenitor cell within the erythroid lineage of hematopoietic tissue in the bone marrow. In hematology and cell biology, this cell type synthesizes hemoglobin and matures through the orthochromatic stage to a reticulocyte and ultimately an RBC (red blood cell).
