In parasitology and microbiology, this structure is a developmental stage (oocyst) of the genus Plasmodium, formed on the outer surface of the mosquito midgut wall. Within the life-cycle hierarchy, the oocyst in the vector’s gut tissue contains differentiating cells that undergo sporogony to produce sporozoites, which later migrate to the salivary glands and enable transmission to vertebrate hosts.
