An elongated, motile protozoan cell representing the ookinete stage of P. falciparum (Plasmodium falciparum) is depicted with an apical end and a central nucleus-like organelle. In the biological hierarchy, this is a unicellular life‑cycle stage of an apicomplexan parasite within the digestive tract of its vector. In parasitology and microbiology, the ookinete forms after fertilization, traverses the Anopheles mosquito midgut epithelium, and differentiates into an oocyst that produces sporozoites for subsequent transmission to humans.
