In the biological hierarchy, it is a protozoan cell residing within a human red blood cell (RBC) in the peripheral blood of Homo sapiens. In parasitology and microbiology, this stage is the transmission form taken up by Anopheles mosquitoes and, after ingestion, undergoes exflagellation to produce motile microgametes that fertilize the macrogamete in the mosquito midgut.
