A cross-sectional schematic shows the plant cell periphery with a polysaccharide-rich cell wall overlying a phospholipid bilayer plasma membrane. The extracellular primary cell wall displays cellulose microfibrils cross-linked by hemicelluloses within a pectin matrix, while the inner PM (plasma membrane) is a lipid bilayer with hydrophilic heads and hydrophobic acyl tails. In the hierarchy, the membrane and wall surround an individual cell within plant tissues. In cell biology and plant anatomy/biochemistry, these structures provide mechanical support, osmotic/turgor control, selective permeability, and signaling interfaces at the cell surface.
