A schematic depicts a desmosome between two adjacent cells, illustrating a cell–cell adhesion complex. The paired plasma membranes are connected by cadherin molecules in the intercellular space, while cytoplasmic dense plaques anchor radiating IF (intermediate filaments) of the keratin cytoskeleton. In the biological hierarchy, this represents a junctional protein complex within epithelial tissue. In cell biology and histology, desmosomes at the lateral membrane provide strong mechanical coupling and resistance to shear, thereby maintaining tissue integrity.
