This cell resides at the base of the crypts of Lieberkühn in the small intestine, forming part of the gastrointestinal (GI) epithelium. In histology and immunology, it functions in innate mucosal defense by releasing AMPs (antimicrobial peptides) such as α-defensins and lysozyme into the intestinal lumen, helping regulate the microbial community and protect neighboring stem cells.
