Each cell contains a replicated chromosome with sister chromatids joined at the centromere, while microtubules extend from the centrosome, a microtubule‑organizing center (MTOC), toward the nucleus as the nuclear envelope disperses. In hierarchy, chromosomes reside within the nucleus of the cell. In cell biology and genetics, this stage establishes spindle attachment and prepares for metaphase II and segregation of deoxyribonucleic acid (DNA).
