A stylized histology diagram depicts the mucosa of the small intestine with finger-like villi projecting into the lumen. The villi are covered by simple columnar epithelium composed of enterocytes bearing an apical brush border of microvilli and basally positioned nuclei, supported by a lamina propria core. In the biological hierarchy, epithelial cells form tissue within an organ of the GI (gastrointestinal) tract. This structure functions in nutrient and water absorption by maximizing luminal surface area.
