A schematic histology illustration shows a U-shaped invagination of simple columnar epithelium forming an intestinal gland, also known as a crypt of Lieberkühn. Columnar epithelial cells with apical microvilli and basally positioned nuclei line the crypt within the intestinal mucosa of the gastrointestinal tract (GI tract). In histology and gastrointestinal anatomy, this epithelial gland functions in secretion, antimicrobial defense, and maintenance of epithelial renewal via resident stem cell compartments.
