A diagrammatic dorsal view of the monogenean flatworm Gyrodactylus, an ectoparasitic helminth of teleost fishes. The organism (phylum Platyhelminthes, class Monogenea) is shown with a posterior opisthaptor bearing sclerotized hamuli and marginal hooks for attachment to host skin and gills. Internal viviparous embryos are depicted within the adult uterus. In parasitology and fish pathology, this parasite feeds on epidermal cells and mucus, enabling direct transmission on the host and causing surface lesions in affected fish (Actinopterygii).
