A stylized parasitology illustration depicts the cercaria larval stage of the parasitic flatworm F. hepatica (Fasciola hepatica), the sheep liver fluke. The organism (Phylum Platyhelminthes, Class Trematoda) shows a triangular body with an anterior oral sucker and a ventral sucker, and an elongated swimming tail. As part of the parasite’s life cycle hierarchy, the cercaria emerges from snail intermediate hosts in freshwater, disperses and encysts as a metacercaria on vegetation, enabling transmission that ultimately targets the bile ducts of mammals.
