The illustration shows a cell’s plasma membrane underlying an extracellular macromolecular network composed of collagen-like fibrils, fibronectin/laminin adhesive glycoproteins, and proteoglycans with glycosaminoglycan (GAG) chains. In the biological hierarchy, these molecules assemble a tissue-level scaffold around individual cells at the PM (plasma membrane) interface. In cell biology, histology, and biochemistry, this network confers structural support, mediates cell adhesion via transmembrane receptors, enables signal transduction, and regulates the diffusion and sequestration of soluble factors in the interstitial space.
