A schematic cross-sectional zoom of vascular endothelium shows contiguous endothelial cells (ECs) with centrally placed nuclei forming the luminal lining of a blood vessel. In histology and anatomy, these cells comprise the tunica intima over a basal lamina, separating circulating blood from the subendothelial connective tissue of the vessel wall. Functionally, ECs regulate vascular permeability, leukocyte trafficking, and hemostasis, and secrete vasoactive mediators such as nitric oxide (NO).
