This metacestode represents the larval stage of the cestode Echinococcus granulosus (E. granulosus), commonly called the dog tapeworm. In the biological hierarchy, protoscoleces reside within brood capsules inside the cyst. In parasitology and pathology, this structure generates infectious protoscoleces and underlies cystic echinococcosis in intermediate hosts.
