Illustration of the apical inflorescence of Cyperus rotundus (C. rotundus), commonly called purple nutsedge, a monocot sedge (family Cyperaceae). The image shows an umbel-like cluster of brown spikelets borne on a green culm with leaf-like bracts. Within the plant hierarchy, multiple spikelets compose the inflorescence located at the stem apex of the aerial shoot. In botany and plant morphology, this reproductive structure enables anemophilous pollination and achene formation in the angiosperm species.
