In biological hierarchy, thylakoid membranes lie within the chloroplast organelle of a plant cell. In cell biology and plant physiology/biochemistry, these membranes carry out the light reactions of photosynthesis, producing ATP (adenosine triphosphate) and NADPH (reduced nicotinamide adenine dinucleotide phosphate). The organelle is situated in the cytoplasm of plant cells, particularly abundant in leaf mesophyll, where the stroma supports carbon fixation.
