At the hierarchy level, individual cells form an epithelial tissue layer bounding a lumen and interfacing with the extracellular matrix (ECM). In anatomy and physiology, this epithelium functions in fluid transport and mucociliary clearance (MCC). The apical surface faces the lumen, while the basal pole contacts the BM.
