The illustration shows replacement of the normal stratified squamous epithelium by simple columnar epithelium, often with goblet cells, consistent with intestinal metaplasia in BE (Barrett esophagus). Columnar epithelial cells form the esophageal mucosa (tissue) within the gastrointestinal system of Homo sapiens (human). In pathology, histology, and gastroenterology, this adaptation to chronic GERD (gastroesophageal reflux disease) increases mucus secretion and acid resistance but carries risk for dysplasia and progression to esophageal adenocarcinoma.
