A schematic cross-sectional view depicts a gymnosperm microsporangium as an elongated sac filled with numerous rounded microspores/pollen grains. In plant anatomy and reproductive biology, this sporangium (reproductive tissue) resides on the abaxial surface of a microsporophyll within the staminate cone (male strobilus) of gymnosperms. The structure arises from microsporocytes, also called microspore mother cells (MMC; synonym PMC, pollen mother cell), and functions to produce microspores that develop into pollen, the male gametophyte of the sporophyte generation.
