A schematic illustrates the principle of a competitive ELISA (enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay). Two Y-shaped antibodies (immunoglobulins, Ig) bind antigen: one engages an unlabeled analyte, while the other binds an enzyme-labeled antigen represented by a starburst signal. This depicts antigen–antibody complexes (molecular level) within an in vitro immunoassay system (assay level) used in immunology and clinical biochemistry to quantify target molecules, where measured signal is inversely proportional to analyte concentration.
