Apoptotic: A schematic cell undergoing programmed cell death with prominent membrane blebbing and formation of small apoptotic bodies. The illustration represents a eukaryotic cell (cell type) within tissue of a multicellular organism, highlighting a cellular process studied in cell biology and pathology. The plasma membrane buds outward into discrete vesicles, reflecting cytoplasmic fragmentation; these apoptotic bodies (ABs) are later phagocytosed by neighboring cells or macrophages, aiding tissue homeostasis. This process, termed programmed cell death (PCD), eliminates damaged or unnecessary cells without triggering inflammation.
