This mean that we as scientists have an enormous power. But, how many people knows about our research? Also, how many people we are impacting with our data? If we want to improve our society through science, we need to talk about science communication.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">Researchers are not shaping today\u2019s public debates. Worst, we are watching pseudoscience and fake news arising in our society. We have all the scientific knowledge to prevent several diseases like measles. And yet, children are still dying because of it. What is the problem? Our knowledge is not reaching a lot of people. Instead, we are even struggling to communicate science with other scientists.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">According to an interesting <a href=\"https:\/\/theconversation.com\/academics-can-change-the-world-if-they-stop-talking-only-to-their-peers-55713\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">article from The conversation<\/a>,\u00a0our scientific data is &#8220;<em>largely sitting in academic journals that are read almost exclusively by our peers.<\/em>\u00a0It is\u00a0estimate that an average journal article is read completely by no more than ten people\u201d. Besides that, &#8220;<em>up to 1.5 million peer-reviewed articles are published annually.<\/em> However, many are ignored even within scientific communities \u2013 82% of articles published in humanities [journals] are not even cited once.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">I already wrote about how to improve science communication in academic environment. According the article, <em>&#8220;some academics insist that it\u2019s not their job to write for the general public. They suggest that doing so would mean they\u2019re \u201cabandoning their mission as intellectuals\u201d. They don\u2019t want to feel like they\u2019re \u201cdumbing down\u201d complex thinking and arguments. The counter argument is that academics can\u2019t operate in isolation from the world\u2019s very real problems.&#8221;<\/em><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">Let me ask you, what happen when you explain to general people what you do for a living? How easy is it? Do you sound like you are speaking a different and boring scientific language? Or do you sound like a crazy scientist doing weird experiments just like in the movies?<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-9249\" src=\"https:\/\/blog.mindthegraph.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/07\/9fd13d793fd6d40f50ce48004880b06a.gif\" alt=\"9fd13d793fd6d40f50ce48004880b06a\" width=\"600\" height=\"260\" \/><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">But reaching the general audience is the key to fight against pseudoscience.
