A<span class=\"\" title=\"\">s we have users from all over the world, we can not talk about just one specific day.<\/span>\u00a0So, l<span title=\"\">et&#8217;s talk about May, the mother&#8217;s month.\u00a0 What it means to be a mother and a scientist and what are the improvements in women health research.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p id=\"P2\" style=\"text-align: right;\"><strong><em>&#8220;I have frequently been questioned, especially by women, of how I could reconcile family life with a scientific career. Well, it has not been easy.&#8221;<\/em><\/strong><\/p>\n<p id=\"P3\" style=\"text-align: right;\">\u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0\u2014Marie\u00a0Sk\u0142odowska Curie, two-time Nobel Prize winner and mother of a daughter, Ir\u00e8ne Joliot-Curie, who also won the Nobel Prize<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><span title=\"\">To celebrate\u00a0mother&#8217;s\u00a0day with a critical analysis of what it means to be a mother\u00a0with a scientific life in 21st Century, we selected our top 5\u00a0articles of motherhood and science:<\/span><\/p>\n<h3 style=\"text-align: justify;\">01. Being a mother and a scientist<\/h3>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.nature.com\/news\/women-in-science-women-s-work-1.12547\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">The nature special: woman<\/a>, talks about the gender gap and how to close it. Despite some progress, women scientists are still paid less, promoted less,win fewer grants and are more likely to leave research than similarly qualified men. The reasons range from overt and covert discrimination to the unavoidable coincidence of the productive and reproductive years.<\/p>\n<p>With several articles, one in special is about young women being scientists and moms.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter\" src=\"https:\/\/www.nature.com\/polopoly_fs\/7.9278.1362492325!\/image\/MonicaBettencourtDias-2.jpg_gen\/derivatives\/landscape_300\/MonicaBettencourtDias-2.jpg\" \/><\/p>\n<p>M\u00f3nica Bettencourt-Dias\u00a0is a\u00a0biologist who explores and shares the intricacies of the cell.\u00a0\u00a0In 2006 she started her own laboratory at the Gulbenkian Institute of Science in Oeiras. Her life changed a few years ago with the long-awaited arrival of her adopted one-year-old daughter.\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.nature.com\/news\/from-the-frontline-30-something-science-1.12549\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Click here to read.<\/a><\/p>\n<h3>02. Gender, motherhood, careers and salary<\/h3>\n<p>The article from <em>The conversation:\u00a0<\/em><a href=\"https:\/\/theconversation.com\/women-earn-less-after-they-have-kids-despite-strong-credentials-94013\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><strong>Women earn less after motherhood<\/strong><\/a> show us that we have a lot to change to create an equal gender workspace. That is what economists call the \u201cgender wage gap,\u201d the difference between what men and women with similar qualifications earn for comparable work, is about parenthood too. Women in science: There are good news too.<\/h3>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">However, there isn&#8217;t just bad news. Women have relative more space in science now and they are\u00a0breaking barriers with an amazing work. Nature promotes the 2018<a href=\"https:\/\/www.nature.com\/articles\/d41586-018-04881-z\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"> #ScientistAtWork photo contest.<\/a> The goal is celebrate the diversity and importance of the research scientists dedicate huge chunks of their lives to.\u00a0 The contest isn&#8217;t just for female scientists. New discoveries in gynecology, obstetrics and women&#8217;s health:<\/h3>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">To give cancer survivors a chance to conceive, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.the-scientist.com\/?articles.view\/articleNo\/51232\/title\/To-Give-Cancer-Survivors-a-Chance-to-Conceive--Scientists-are-Designing-Artificial-Ovaries\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">scientists are designing artificial ovaries<\/a>. The goal is to house patients\u2019 follicles in a specially designed tissue matrix and reinsert them after treatment.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">As Marie Curie said, isn&#8217;t easy to be a woman with a family life\u00a0and a scientific career, but we can see efforts to change that. Here in Mind the Graph we belive that science needs to have more space for mothers and women in general.
