Den har en viktig roll i v\u00e4xthuseffekten, tillsammans med andra gaser som metan. V\u00e4xthuseffekten g\u00f6r det m\u00f6jligt f\u00f6r livet p\u00e5 jorden att f\u00e5nga upp v\u00e4rmen.  Normalt uppr\u00e4tth\u00e5ller jordens kolcykel en naturlig balans av kol i atmosf\u00e4ren, marken och havet genom \"planetens andning\". Men m\u00e4nskliga aktiviteter som utsl\u00e4pp av fossila br\u00e4nslen bryter balansen i kolcykeln och orsakar klimatf\u00f6r\u00e4ndringar.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"is-content-justification-center is-layout-flex wp-container-1 wp-block-buttons\">\n<div class=\"wp-block-button\"><a class=\"wp-block-button__link wp-element-button\" href=\"https:\/\/mindthegraph.com\/science_figures\">Skapa effektiva vetenskapsfigurer p\u00e5 n\u00e5gra minuter<\/a><\/div>\n<\/div>\n\n\n\n<h2><strong>Hur kolcykeln fungerar<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Haven spelar en viktig roll i kolcykeln. Gasutbytet skapar balans mellan atmosf\u00e4ren och haven. Under tiden f\u00e5ngar alger och andra autotrofa organismer upp koldioxid och tillf\u00f6r syre genom fotosyntes. Dessa processer i kombination med djurens andning och m\u00e4nskliga aktiviteter \u00e4r en del av den kortsiktiga cykeln.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Men det finns ocks\u00e5 en l\u00e5ngsiktig cykel, som sker \u00f6ver l\u00e4ngre tidsperioder. Enligt National Academies \u00e4r \"<em>Under miljontals \u00e5r har luftens koldioxid i kombination med regnvatten bildat svaga syror som mycket l\u00e5ngsamt l\u00f6ser upp stenar.<\/em> Floder och vattendrag transporterar dessa mineraler till haven d\u00e4r de anv\u00e4nds av djur f\u00f6r att bilda korallrev och sn\u00e4ckor och hj\u00e4lper till att balansera havets pH-v\u00e4rde. Under \u00e4nnu l\u00e4ngre tidsperioder lagras organiskt kol (som bildas av rester av marint liv) djupt inne i jordskorpan och bildar fossila br\u00e4nslen, som olja och naturgas. En del av detta kol kommer att sl\u00e4ppas ut i atmosf\u00e4ren igen av vulkaner och p\u00e5 s\u00e5 s\u00e4tt slutf\u00f6rs kretsloppet.\"<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>M\u00e4nskliga aktiviteter som utsl\u00e4pp av fossila br\u00e4nslen och industriella processer \u00f6kar koldioxidhalten i atmosf\u00e4ren. F\u00f6ljaktligen absorberar havet mer och mer koldioxid. Dessa uppgifter har tillhandah\u00e5llits genom analys av NASA<sup>1<\/sup>. De globala temperaturerna 2018 var 1,5 grader Fahrenheit (0,83 grader Celsius) varmare \u00e4n medelv\u00e4rdet 1951-1980, enligt forskare vid NASA:s Goddard Institute for Space Studies (GISS) i New York. Globalt sett ligger 2018 \u00e5rs temperaturer efter 2016, 2017 och 2015.
