Bakgrunden till uppt\u00e4ckten \u00e4r att Fleming hade unders\u00f6kt stafylokockers egenskaper. En g\u00e5ng m\u00e4rkte han att en kultur var kontaminerad med en svamp och att de stafylokockkolonier som omedelbart omgav svampen hade f\u00f6rst\u00f6rts, medan andra stafylokockkolonier l\u00e4ngre bort var normala.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Fleming odlade m\u00f6glet i en renkultur och fann att det producerade en substans som d\u00f6dade ett antal sjukdomsframkallande bakterier. Han identifierade m\u00f6glet som tillh\u00f6rande sl\u00e4ktet Penicillium, fr\u00e5n vilket han extraherade och renade \u00e4mnet Penicilllin.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Han unders\u00f6kte dess positiva antibakteriella effekt p\u00e5 m\u00e5nga organismer och noterade att den p\u00e5verkade bakterier som stafylokocker och m\u00e5nga andra grampositiva patogener som orsakar scharlakansfeber, lunginflammation, meningit och difteri, men inte tyfoidfeber eller paratyfoidfeber, som orsakas av gramnegativa bakterier, f\u00f6r vilka han vid den tidpunkten s\u00f6kte ett botemedel. Den p\u00e5verkade ocks\u00e5 Neisseria gonorrhoeae, som orsakar gonorr\u00e9, \u00e4ven om denna bakterie \u00e4r gramnegativ.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Fleming publicerade sin uppt\u00e4ckt 1929 i British Journal of Experimental Pathology, men artikeln fick liten uppm\u00e4rksamhet.
