Avst\u00e5nden i rymden \u00e4r s\u00e5 stora att vanliga meter och kilometer inte r\u00e4cker till. Astronomer anv\u00e4nder ett mycket st\u00f6rre m\u00e5tt, som kallas astronomisk enhet. Detta \u00e4r det genomsnittliga avst\u00e5ndet fr\u00e5n jorden till solen, eller ungef\u00e4r 150 miljoner kilometer. Merkurius befinner sig bara 0,39 astronomiska enheter fr\u00e5n solen, medan Jupiter kretsar p\u00e5 ett avst\u00e5nd av 5,5 astronomiska enheter. Koldioxid \u00e4r en viktig gas i v\u00e4xthuseffekten. Normalt v\u00e4rmer solen planetens yta under dagen, men under natten kyls planeten av genom att sl\u00e4ppa ut infrar\u00f6d str\u00e5lning (v\u00e4rme) tillbaka ut i rymden. Den var det f\u00f6rsta objektet i Kuiperb\u00e4ltet som uppt\u00e4cktes och \u00e4r den st\u00f6rsta k\u00e4nda plutoiden (eller&nbsp;<i>Isdv\u00e4rg<\/i>).<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Kuiperb\u00e4ltet <sup>1<\/sup>  \u00e4r en cirkumstell\u00e4r skiva i det yttre solsystemet som str\u00e4cker sig fr\u00e5n Neptunus omloppsbana.  Den liknar asteroidb\u00e4ltet, men \u00e4r mycket st\u00f6rre.  Liksom asteroidb\u00e4ltet best\u00e5r den huvudsakligen av sm\u00e5 kroppar eller rester fr\u00e5n n\u00e4r solsystemet bildades. Medan m\u00e5nga asteroider huvudsakligen best\u00e5r av sten och metall, best\u00e5r de flesta objekt i Kuiperb\u00e4ltet huvudsakligen av frysta flyktiga \u00e4mnen (s\u00e5 kallade \"isar\"), s\u00e5som metan, ammoniak och vatten. I Kuiperb\u00e4ltet finns tre officiellt erk\u00e4nda dv\u00e4rgplaneter: Pluto, Haumea och Makemake.
