Za razliko od drugih vitaminov deluje vitamin D kot hormon in na\u0161e celice imajo zanj receptor. Pri ljudeh sta najpomembnej\u0161i spojini v tej skupini vitamin D3 (znan tudi kot holekalciferol) in vitamin D2 (ergokalciferol).<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">Telo ga proizvaja iz holesterola, ko je ko\u017ea izpostavljena son\u010dni svetlobi.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">Pomembno je vzdr\u017eevati zdravo raven vitamina D. Ima pomembno vlogo pri homeostazi in presnovi kalcija. Njegovo odkritje je bilo posledica prizadevanj, da bi na\u0161li prehransko snov, ki manjka otrokom z rahitisom (otro\u0161ka oblika osteomalacije).
