Entretanto, as atividades humanas como emiss\u00e3o de combust\u00edveis f\u00f3sseis est\u00e3o quebrando o equil\u00edbrio do ciclo do carbono causando mudan\u00e7as clim\u00e1ticas, como o aumento do efeito estufa e a acidifica\u00e7\u00e3o dos oceanos.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Portanto, para entender as conseq\u00fc\u00eancias da acidifica\u00e7\u00e3o oce\u00e2nica, \u00e9 preciso primeiro recapitular o ciclo do carbono. O \u00e1cido carb\u00f4nico dissolve-se rapidamente para formar \u00edons H+ (um \u00e1cido) e bicarbonato, HCO3- (uma base). A \u00e1gua do mar \u00e9 naturalmente saturada com outra base, o \u00edon carbonato (CO3-2) que age como um anti\u00e1cido para neutralizar o H+, formando mais bicarbonato. Na verdade, o oceano tornou-se quase 30% mais \u00e1cido do que era no in\u00edcio da Era Industrial.
