Het speelt een belangrijke rol in het broeikaseffect, samen met andere gassen zoals methaan. Het broeikaseffect zorgt ervoor dat het leven op aarde de warmte opvangt.  Normaal gesproken zorgt de koolstofcyclus van de aarde voor een natuurlijk evenwicht van koolstof in de atmosfeer, het land en de oceaan door de \"ademhaling van de planeet\". Menselijke activiteiten, zoals de uitstoot van fossiele brandstoffen, verstoren echter het evenwicht van de koolstofcyclus, waardoor het klimaat verandert.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"is-content-justification-center is-layout-flex wp-container-1 wp-block-buttons\">\n<div class=\"wp-block-button\"><a class=\"wp-block-button__link wp-element-button\" href=\"https:\/\/mindthegraph.com\/science_figures\">Effectieve wetenschapscijfers maken in enkele minuten<\/a><\/div>\n<\/div>\n\n\n\n<h2><strong>Hoe de koolstofcyclus werkt<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>De oceanen spelen een belangrijke rol in de koolstofcyclus. De gasuitwisseling zorgt voor een evenwicht tussen de atmosfeer en de oceanen. Ondertussen vangen algen en andere autotrofe organismen kooldioxide op en zorgen voor zuurstof via fotosynthese. Deze processen in combinatie met de ademhaling van dieren en menselijke activiteiten maken deel uit van de kortetermijncyclus.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Er is echter ook een langetermijncyclus, die zich over langere perioden afspeelt. Volgens de National Academies, \"<em>Gedurende miljoenen jaren verbindt kooldioxide in de lucht zich met regenwater tot zwakke zuren die heel langzaam rotsen oplossen.<\/em> Rivieren en stromen voeren deze mineralen naar de oceanen, waar ze door dieren worden gebruikt om koraalriffen en schelpen te vormen en de pH van de oceaan in evenwicht te brengen. Over een nog langere periode wordt organische koolstof (gevormd uit de resten van zeeleven) diep in de aardkorst opgeslagen en vormt daar fossiele brandstoffen, zoals olie en aardgas. Een deel van deze koolstof wordt door vulkanen terug in de atmosfeer gebracht, waarmee de cyclus rond is.\"<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Door menselijke activiteiten zoals de uitstoot van fossiele brandstoffen en industri\u00eble processen neemt de CO2 in de atmosfeer toe. Daardoor neemt de oceaan steeds meer kooldioxide op. Deze gegevens werden verstrekt door analyse van NASA<sup>1<\/sup>. De wereldwijde temperaturen waren in 2018 1,5 graden Fahrenheit (0,83 graden Celsius) warmer dan het gemiddelde van 1951 tot 1980, volgens wetenschappers van NASA's Goddard Institute for Space Studies (GISS) in New York. Wereldwijd liggen de temperaturen van 2018 achter op die van 2016, 2017 en 2015.
