Mensen met schizofrenie kunnen lijken alsof ze het contact met de werkelijkheid kwijt zijn. Om de ontwikkeling van schizofrenie te begrijpen, moeten we het hebben over synaptisch snoeien. Volgens een artikel uit Nature neuroscience <sup>1<\/sup>, &#8220;<em>synaptisch snoeien is het proces van synapsafschaffing dat plaatsvindt van de vroege kindertijd tot de vroege volwassenheid.\"<\/em>&nbsp;Terwijl de hersenen zich ontwikkelen, vormen omgevingsinputs de neurale circuits. Dit proces elimineert overtollige synapsen die tijdens de vroege ontwikkeling ontstaan en versterkt de resterende synapsen.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Volgens de \"synaptic pruning\"-hypothese is overmatig of ongeordend synaptisch snoeien gerelateerd aan schizofrenie. De psychiater Irwin Feinberg opperde deze hypothese in 1982.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Bovendien hebben beeldvormings- en postmortemstudies van menselijke hersenen enkele jaren geleden nieuw bewijsmateriaal opgeleverd ter ondersteuning van de hypothese van \"synaptisch snoeien\". Volgens Carl Sellgren, Roy Perlis en medewerkers zou het immuunsysteem een rol kunnen spelen bij het overmatig snoeien van synapsen. Hun nieuwe artikel<sup>1<\/sup> gepubliceerd in Nature neuroscience beschrijft een in vitro model dat cellulaire herprogrammering toepast om schizofreniepati\u00ebnt-specifieke microglia-gemedieerde synaps-opname te bestuderen.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Microglia zijn een collectief type neuroglia (gliacellen) die overal in de hersenen en het ruggenmerg voorkomen. Zij vormen 10-15% van alle cellen in de hersenen. Als macrofaagcellen zijn zij de eerste en belangrijkste vorm van actieve afweer in het centrale zenuwstelsel (CZS).
